New figures show that yard fuel prices have risen by around 6p a liter over the past half-year.
The AA has released figures which show the average price of fuel per liter hit a record high of 177.9p on Sunday, down from 172.1p on Friday 27 May.
So for the average family car, which is around 55 litres, that means petrol has gone up by around £3. In addition, diesel prices rose to 185.0p per liter from 182.7p in the same period.
AA fuel pricing spokesman Luc Bosdet said: “Shock and bewilderment is the only way to describe what happened at the gas station during the mid-term shutdown. No wonder almost half of drivers stayed at home during the long jubilee break."
"Oil was the driving force that topped $120 a barrel for the first time in late March as demand for cars pushed oil prices higher this summer."
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams described the record fuel prices as "appalling".
"Now the price of oil is above 120 dollars per barrel, and the pound is above 1.2 dollars, the worst is yet to come," he said. “Unfortunately, we expect the average petrol price to cross the 180p mark this week, with diesel rising by a further 190p.
"There is an urgent need for stronger government intervention, whether in the form of additional fuel taxes or reduced value added tax. Drivers can't do anything without help. This is quickly becoming a national crisis for my drivers. 32 million cars and countless businesses.
