Hastings United Boss: We Aim To Be In Promotion Mix

After a summer of major changes on the pitch, which saw the departure of manager Gary Elphick, chairman Billy Wood and a host of players, Barnes is pleased with how planning for the new season has gone.

They beat the Met Police 3-0 and Corinthian-Casuals 4-0 in their last two friendlies and recalled former Hastings midfielder Adam Lovatt to the club after playing for Sutton and Tonbridge.

Dan Barnes will send his side to Cheshunt tomorrow for their league debut with promotion in mind.

"We are 100 percent ready," Barnes told us. "We want to be closer or closer to the playoffs, we want to go further than last year when the team barely made the playoffs."

"And I think the team is strong enough to do that."

There were goals in the pre-season, Femi Akinwande scored ten goals and many more contributed. And Lovatt adds even more quality to the squad.

The defensive midfielder started his career with the United States before joining Sutton United and one season with the Tonbridge Angels.

Her return to Pilot Field proves there's no place like home and Lovatt said: “It's great to be back with this ambitious football team.

"I look forward to being part of this great community and working hard to ensure a successful club and a great season for the fans."

Boss Barnes said: “To lure Adam back to Hastings United is a huge blow for everyone at the club.

"We know we are getting people and players of the highest level who can contribute to success. I look forward to working with him and supporting him on his journey, as I am sure team success will translate to individual success."

Meanwhile, Barnes was encouraged by a positive fans' forum attended by himself, his assistant Craig Stone and captain Tyler Christian-Law following the Met Police test.

He said it was clear United had a passionate, understanding and knowledgeable fan base.

There are injuries for tomorrow: Stone strained his hamstring and could be in trouble.
