From The Farm: Stage Triumphant ‘Lehman Trilogy Worth A Mint On Stage And In History

Artistic Director PJ Powers of Chicago's TimeLine Theater Company was a guest on my weekly WJOB radio show in September to discuss Stefano Masini's premiere Chicago production and the Tony Award-winning play The Lehman Trilogy, currently on display. With Broadway in Chicago.

I told him I knew the last names of these three brothers, who have always been credited with the financial invention of the "broker" in everything from trading to investing and everything in between.

Powers was intrigued during our face-to-face interview when I explained that in our northwest Indiana farming community we have a family with a similar last name that is also over a hundred years old and has a similar last name, Lyman, but without the last name. The “H” and the “H” have a similar visual identity.

William Lehman founded the Leman Mint Co. near Bremen around 1939 and also served as a "middleman" in purchasing raw peppermint oil harvested from our farm and from Stark County mint growers.

Today, Lyman still maintains its family name, produces individually packaged hard mints in mint and peppermint flavors, and still wears its trademark football uniform adorned with red and green stripes. Today, mints are made for Leman's by Atkinson Candy Co., based in Texas.

Investments in the Lehman Trilogy phase also detail the process of "creating money", but in a very different way, referring to financial gains through skillful investments.

Now on Broadway at the Chicago Broadway Theater at Water Tower Place, 175 E. Chestnut Street in Chicago and running through November 26, this three-hour story with two intermissions is something everyone should experience and learn how a story can do : repeat.

The cast, led by Nick Bowling and Vanessa Stalling, includes just three actors, who not only play the three main brothers who arrived from Bavaria in the 19th century to settle in Alabama, but also play successive generations of the Lyman family that runs the company. financial company. Empire. Which collapsed in 2008.

Mitchell J. Finn gives an excellent performance as the stoic Henry Lyman, Anish Jethmalani gives a moving performance as the dreamy, visionary brother Emanuel, and Joey Slotnick is perfection as the fun third part of the equation in the role of Brother Meyer.

The novel is told in three parts through intelligent and symbolic production, and the audience is greeted with opening moments that transport everything back in time, to that cold September morning in 1844, when Brother Henry arrived for the first time as a proud Jewish immigrant from Bavaria to New Zealand. York. York. After a month. And half a trip at sea. Later, his two brothers joined him and their American odyssey developed in the textile sector, in cotton cultivation, in the banking sector then in investments, until 163 years later Later, the family business they founded went bankrupt, causing the world's largest financial crisis. . date.

Liman's trilogy was first presented to the public ten years ago on October 8, 2013, opened on Broadway in September 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic, and closed in January 2022. It has won five Tony Awards, including best play and best director. Play for Sam Mendes and Best Comedy Actor for Simon Russell Beale.

Our small farming community of North Judson continues to embrace mint as the crop of choice, and we continue to hold an annual Mint Festival each June, which includes a mint concoction, of which I have been a member Many times.

One of my favorite winning recipes comes from Chris Comino, who played high school basketball with my older sister, Pam, and whose mother, Barb, was a longtime school bus driver.

Easy to make and prepare, delicious and tempting as a difficult dessert, Chris Comino's Mint Chocolate Delight recipe is rich, layered and exciting, just like Lehman's new Tony Award-winning trilogy for Chicago, both of which have a inestimable value. Enjoy it at first sight.
