Variety reported Thursday that the marketing campaign for Paramount Pictures' upcoming Scream VI involved real people in at least three cities dressed as masked antagonists and wielding knives, citing sources familiar with the film.

Recent sightings of real ghost faces include a man dressed as the character on a street corner in Sonoma, California, where parts of the original 1996 Scream were filmed, prompting several 911 calls on Monday, according to NBC Bay Area.

On Monday morning, the Sonoma Police Department released a statement via Facebook confirming that the ghost-faced man in Sonoma "was hired by a Paramount-owned company to promote the new Scream movie."
