Schools Only Given 7p Extra To Cover Free Meals Despite Cost Of Living Crisis

Ministers have proposed free school meals for children aged four to seven with a small price increase between 7pm and 7pm

And school unions are furious over lunch allowances falling from £2.34 to £2.41.

It should have been at least 23 pence if the increase had prevented 10 percent inflation.

James Bowen of the National Union of Teachers says: "Seven extra drams a day is not enough to cover the rising expenses related to schools.

"Funds are insufficient and schools and restaurateurs are struggling to provide healthy and balanced meals."

And Avril Chambers of the GMB union, which represents 100,000 school workers, added: “Education funding has been cut for a decade under the Conservatives.

Development has been defined as a "national shame"

It is a national shame that we are losing students. A 7p increase won't make any difference to the worst lifetime cost of a generation. "

Labor Rosena Allin-Khan spoke to ministers after voters protested in Tooting, London.

He said. “Schools and councils are under enormous pressure to help families when the government has to step in.

The government spokesman said. “We know that many families are facing high costs, so the government continues to work to deal with the pressures.

The 1.25 million children receive a free lunch and the children of 1 and 2 years.

But critics say funding has been cut by £35, meaning schools will have to find more of their budgets to pay for textbooks and teachers.

Lib Dem Munira Wilson, spokesperson for education, said: "This government is overlooking our children.

"Ministers should provide the additional funds our children need."

All children must have a hot two-course meal at school, which includes a choice of meat or vegetarian, potatoes, pasta or rice, salad and dessert.
