“The idea was to use a mix of different ingredients that have been important to us throughout our thirty years of business,” says Avery, who will also be releasing a special beer called 30 during the event.
The beer uses barley, such as Special B, which plays a key role in Avery's legendary high-alcohol beer, as well as hops, such as Simcoe, which is used in Maharaj, and Columbus, which is used in Hog Heaven. The strong beer was aged in Stranahan whiskey casks and had a slightly dry, hoppy feel. “The idea was to have equal parts of all of these ingredients,” Avery said. “You can smell and taste the malt, the hops and the cask. There will be a noticeable caloric component.
30 will have a maximum ABV of around 15%, which is in line with the typical range that stronger Avery beers typically fall into. In addition, the festival will feature vintage beers such as Rumpkin, Tweak and Uncle Jacobs from Avery's Cellar, as well as beers from over sixty staff-selected breweries. Continuing this theme, the ideas of the staff were used to create three beers for the festival: Schwarzbier, Rice Lager and Cherry-Coconut IPA. There will also be live music and food trucks.
Avery said he stole the idea of an "honest and fair" invitation from Firestone Walker, who do it every year and will do it again this year. “Rachel [Burrell] coordinates our events and I think she puts on some of the best beer festivals in the country,” Avery said. Below is a list of the beers that festival attendees will bring to the festival, as well as descriptions written by breweries (the list is subject to change).
